Cloud cost mistakes after the first migration

The first cloud migration often succeeds on a technicality: the site is up, the database moved, nobody rolled back. The bill arrives later as a second, quieter outage.

Orphaned environments

Staging copies, forgotten snapshots, and a Kubernetes cluster that never slept. If a resource has no owner in the org chart, it will have a line on the invoice.

Lift-and-shift without an exit

Moving a noisy monolith onto a large instance is not cloud architecture. It is colocation with better branding. Rightsizing, autoscaling, and a real landing zone have to be in the plan, not a phase two that never starts.

Observability as a cost tool

You cannot cut what you cannot attribute. Tags, budgets, and product-level dashboards turn a surprise into a conversation. Treat the invoice like a design review. It is one.
