Custom software vs off-the-shelf for Indian SMEs
Anand Hiswankar · 2026-09-12
Most growing companies in India do not have a software problem. They have a process problem that software either respects or fights. Off-the-shelf wins when the work is standard: accounting, email, payroll. Custom software wins when the workflow is the moat.
When buying is the adult choice
If a category tool already encodes the regulation, the reports, and the hiring market, buy it. Forcing a custom build onto a solved problem is how you fund a second operations team inside engineering.
When building pays back
Build when your edge is speed, a peculiar customer journey, or a data model no vendor will ever care about. Field operations, underwriting, claims, manufacturing schedules, and multi-party marketplaces almost always outgrow templates.
A practical test
Write the weekly ritual your best operator cannot skip. If a SaaS admin panel can host that ritual without five workarounds, buy. If the ritual needs four systems and a WhatsApp group, you are already paying for custom software. You are just paying in people.
