12 / Rupees in words

Turn a rupee amount into words.

Type an amount and read it in the Indian system: crores, lakhs, thousands, and paise. The line is the one people write on a cheque or under an invoice total.

One thousand eight hundred forty two rupees and fifty paise only

This is an estimate for planning. It is not a bank quote, a tax invoice, or financial advice. The calculation stays in your browser.

How to use Rupees in words

  1. 1. Type the amount

Commas are optional. Use a decimal point for paise, with at most two digits.

  2. 2. Read the words

The line uses crore and lakh, then rupees, and paise when the amount has a decimal part.

  3. 3. Copy it

Copy the sentence onto the cheque or the invoice. It is built on this page and is not sent anywhere.

Indian grouping, not Western

1,00,000 is one lakh, not one hundred thousand. 1,00,00,000 is one crore. The converter groups the last three digits, then pairs, which is how an Indian invoice is read aloud.

Rupees and paise

1842.50 becomes “One thousand eight hundred forty two rupees and fifty paise only.” A whole number omits paise. One rupee and one paisa stay singular.

Where the line is used

Cheques, payment vouchers, and the amount-in-words line on a tax invoice. The words follow the number you type. They do not check that the number matches a bill.
